  • REMOTE WORK

In today’s climate remote work is a viable and reliable way to grow your career while living in the city you want to live in.  In Ponca City we have a lot of resources to help you set up your remote work

    CoWorking
The Link is a coworking space. Coworking spaces features offices, shared tables, individual desks or other working environments that people use to work. Coworkers come from a variety of backgrounds, but generarlly are self-employed or working for different employers, sometimes remotely. Coworking allows them to share equipment, ideas, and knowledge.

    City-Wide Fiber
The City of Ponca City and it’s forward thinking staff and elected officials have begun and implemented a Fiber to Home initiative where you can now not only get fiber optics internet to your business, but also to your home.  This reliable, ultra-high speed and capacity internet can really make or break your home office.

    remote work employment

Make sure you understand what type of employment is being offered. Many work at home jobs treat their workers as contractors which means that you will get a 1099-MISC form and the company does not withhold state or federal taxes nor are they reporting compensation to the social security administration which you are then required to do on your own.  If you are hired as an employee, you will receive a W-2 and taxes will be withheld and reported as expected with a typical job.  Additionally, many contractors will pay you by the minute, piece, or phone call and will not pay for idle time in between paid transactions. As an employee you will be paid by the hour at a rate never lower than the state minimum wage.

Before seeking to work remotely make sure you have the right setup in your home or a co-working space to ensure you are successful.  Working from your couch or the kitchen table may sound appealing but without the right setup you will quickly become fatigued and will also be less efficient.  Make sure you have a desk in a quiet area, with a comfortable office chair and your setup is ergonomically correct.  Depending on the type of work you are doing you may also want to consider upgrading your internet package so that you have enough bandwidth to join video conferences without the frustration of technical issues or lag.

Things to look for when applying for jobs is travel:
    • Many companies require travel, some more than others. Many companies understand that when you are remote you can accomplish pretty much everything you need from your location, whereas others find it important to travel to the client site.
    • It is important to set a work schedule as it is very easy to never shut work off when your desk is right around the corner. Working from home does give you that ability to have flexible hours however it is important to know when to shut it down for the day.
    • Stay social, it is very easy to become a hermit and never leave your home!

A micropolitan community like Ponca City cannot support a large university, but it is important for our local workforce to be able to earn a quality degree in town.  People like the moms whose kids are going to school here, or people earning their degree while working at their careers.  The University Center in Ponca City offers a unique experience of interactive classroom technology to have the in-person experience with universities across the state.  Dozens of associates, bachelors, and master’s degree programs are offered as well as a dedicated onsite nursing instructor from NWOSU.  The UC is also involved with future workforce through their maker spaces full of VR technology, 3D printers, and robotic classes.
