Fourth of July Celebration - Ponca City Style

The Fourth of July Holiday is on the horizon next week. Within Kay County, that means parades in Tonkawa and Blackwell and after dark fireworks displays everywhere. For us in Ponca City, The City and Parks & Rec does an excellent fireworks show at Lake Ponca, so don't miss that one. If you have a high vantage point without trees blocking the view, Kaw Lake, Tonkawa, Blackwell and other "in the country" displays are visible all night. Blackwell's parade begins at 10 am and Tonkawa's parade begins at Noon. Always a good time at those parades.

Keep in mind, there are no firework displays permitted with the city limits of Ponca City. Sparks fly and dogs get testy. And Ponca Lake is within city limits, so don't fire them off there either. Just fair warning. Enjoy your family and friends on this celebration of our freedom as a nation.

PCDA Trustees Tour Duke Building

Spec building Duke had visitors touring through its very new walls: PCDA Trustees and friends. In a Special Meeting posted at PCDA and City Hall, Duke was toured by PCDA Trustees, as well as Mayor Nicholson and Shelley Arrott, Ponca City Chamber CEO.

The 39,000 square foot building is 80% complete on the inside and is awaiting a few dry days to pour the concrete parking lot. Duke is ready for companies to check out its power and capacity. For your tour and more information, don't hesitate to call staff at the office, 580.765.7070.

Celebrate and Enjoy Community Events

The Ponca City community comes together regularly to support our community. Staff knows that sounds redundant, but it needs to be said. There are two opportunities before the fireworks go off on the Fourth to celebrate and assist our Ponca City community: Friday, June 30th at the Sean Anderson Memorial Fish Fry & Blood Drive at the Carolyn Renfro Event Center (see flyer below) and for all the Veterans and their families in our community, head out to Lake Ponca on Saturday, July 1st at 4 pm for some free hot dogs brought to you by The Veterans Landing and several other businesses and organizations in the community (again, flyer is below).

These types of events showcase the orgs in our community as they benefit friends and neighbors. And these aren't the only two events happening for the good of the community. Ask around to support other organizations including NERA, United Way and more. It's another great day in Ponca City.

Family Fun: Time for a Fox Hunt

This weekend and The Fourth of July are an excellent opportunity for a fox hunt right here in Ponca City. Between downtown murals and the large painted foxes located in front of multiple businesses, your kids and any visitors to Ponca will enjoy an early morning or late evening fox hunt. It's an Oklahoma Summer, so limit those high temperature, middle of the day outside excursions. Unless you are at Wentz or AMBUC Pools.

Click on the fox and check out all the central business district, downtown foxes. Stay foxy people. For more information on the fox statues in Ponca City, take the online tour here.

City Central Hosting Immersive Art

Were you one of the lucky 5,000 that toured the immersive art experience Seed Reef in the John McNeese Gallery located in City Central? Well, the collaborative artists group is at it again to bring Ponca City a bigger, faster, more engaging immersive art experience. This one will be an art experience based in a future world shaped by A.I. to train humanity to be a better species. Intrigued? So was staff. This exhibit will be at City Central in 2024.

Large collaborative projects like this immersive art event take a lot of planning, fundraising and volunteer time. Upcoming collaborative events include the Hispanic Heritage Festival on Sunday, October 15, Ponca Con on Saturday, November 4th and coming in 2024, The Iris Festival. Interested in assisting, volunteering time or want more information? Give the PCDA office a call and we will connect you with these collabs. Or just come to Business on the Balcony on Tuesday, July 11th. Staff will have ALL the info available that morning, 7 to 9 am.

A Great Way to Recruit Workforce - Job Fairs

Recruiting skilled and willing-to-work employees is a top request from Ponca City employers. Heck, it is a top request from employers all across the United States. One of the ways PCDA can assist with recruitment is attending job fairs. Here's the criteria: Staff needs at least two companies willing to share job descriptions and send a representative to be a company voice at the Job fair.

Last week PCDA staff attended a job fair in Oklahoma City with a local company. Though the job fair was sponsored by OSU, the event was held in OKC to better reach students and alumni. Resumes were gathered, hands were shaken and some top notch candidates were identified. As our closest large University, OSU is a great recruitment tool. They host several job fairs in the fall which are geared to specific programs such as engineering, agriculture, business and construction. Would your company be interested in attending with PCDA any of these job fair dates? Bonus: PCDA will pick up the booth cost if more than one company is represented. Your company coordinates with PCDA Staff and attends the event to recruit:

  • College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT) Career Fair September 19, 2023

  • Business Career Fair September 20, 2023

  • Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources Career Fair, Sept 21, 2023

  • Construction Industry Career Fair October 5, 2023

If your Ponca City company is seeking to add or recruit new employees, this is a great resource for your HR Department. Give Liz Leaming a call or email to start coordinating your next job fair recruitment strategy.

New PCDA Building Duke Gets Walls

Spec building Duke in the Airport Industrial Park may not have a parking lot yet (thank you rain), but staff is happy to report 80% of the walls are up inside.

And really, in exchange for not being in a drought situation anymore, staff is being very patient on the installation of all that concrete for the driveway and parking. Well, most staff. There is a ramp and sheetrock was delivered. Progress continues as the mudding and taping of the walls gets going.

Elected Officials 2023 Picnic

PCDA attended the Ponca Politics Committee hosted Elected Officials Picnic held at Big Fork Ranch. Many thanks to our local and state elected officials for their dedicated service and The Evans Family for hosting at the Big Fork Ranch.

Attendees including District Attorney, City Commissioners, Representative Luttrell and Senator Coleman to name a few. Hands were shaken, information exchanged and updates given. If you would like to become more involved in the Ponca Politics Committee, reach out to the Chamber of Commerce for more information.

Visioning Boards for Manufacturing Companies

Staff told you last week about the new machine delivered to K&C. What we didn't know is that K&C has a Vision Board; A wish list. And that hits a little different when you are talking about state of the art, large pieces of machinery like this. Congrats again to K&C on the new machine, but good job on thinking about the future with your vision board/wish list right there on the wall.

Ponca City Leadership Applications Due Today

The 37th Ponca City Leadership Class application dealine is today. This program is a great way for new employees to learn all things Ponca City, Kay County and Oklahoma. Also great for the lifetime resident. We promise you will find out so many things you never knew about Ponca City. Fill out the application for a September start date. Leadership is the best 12 days you will spend with 20 of your new best friends.

City Central Taking Holiday Bookings

Are you thinking about Christmas in July? How about a family reunion or a big holiday gathering? Is your company looking for a Christmas Party location? Might staff suggest The Summit Conference Space. City Central is booking six months out and guess what? Christmas and holiday time is right around the corner. Call Aubrey at 580.765.7070 to find available times and get your holiday party, birthday party or conference on the books.

The Summit seats 600 in chairs, 300 at tables and the rental includes tables, chairs and even the tablecloths. Need to see the space before committing? Staff is always in the building 8 to 5, Monday through Friday. Maybe not Fourth of July, but we would love to tour you through and answer questions. Find our more at CityCentralPC.com.

Make time to see the two new murals completed this week in Ponca City. Above is the Unity Mural on the Ponca City Chamber of Commerce building and below is the mural at the Child Development Center. Both buildings are downtown and are so much better in person. While you check out these murals, make sure to walk around downtown to see all the public art and take pictures with the foxes and dinosaurs. You'll see what we mean.

What Is Happening This Week at PCDA

Ponca City was on a top 10 list; one of the good ones from an economic standpoint. PCDA Board of Trustees met this week and were updated by staff on water detention projects, upcoming maintenance to the PCDA Hangar (now leased by NextGen), Spec Building Duke and the PCDA budget for 2023-2024 was approved. Trustees also elected a new slate of officers for the next fiscal year. It was quite a packed meeting.

For the month of May, PCDA staff stalked, we mean talked, with 32 new companies and 147 existing companies. City Central had 124 contacts and there were chats with 97 regional partners. These numbers are staff's bread and butter and are where new business to Ponca City come from (Welcome Trailer-Butler) as well as leading to company collaborations. Don't just take our word for it. Keep reading and find out more.

Ponca City in Top 10 for Lowest Cost of Living

The PCDA Board of Trustees heard some good news about the Ponca City economy this week and now, so can you. Ponca City has ranked in the Top 10 Least Expensive Urban Areas. The Cost of Living Index (COLI) is published quarterly by C2ER – The Council for Community and Economic Research. 100% is the national average. Ponca City is currently at 82.9%. Which means a $1 spent in Ponca City stretches 17 cents farther. To compare costs with any of the other 260 communities participating, visit the Cost of Living Calculator at goponca.com.
