Weekly Update March 13, 2020

WILD WEEK..… So we start with an understatement. Between the COVID-19 virus, the feud between Russia and Saudi Arabia that shocked oil prices, and the reactions to both of these major events, it would be difficult to even suggest that business as usual continues. As far as the virus, it really is impossible to predict what the impact will be to Ponca City. Ponca City has a wide variety of industries, all of whom have their own supply lines, customers, etc. There is no question that the shutdown of China and the disruption to supply lines is going to slow things down. How long? Probably not as long as some pundits are saying but it will be real.
Ponca City is connected directly to the global economy so if the global economy catches a cold, expect Ponca City to at least sneeze. As far as oil is concerned, Ponca City is a downstream community, meaning that we are not nearly as invested in exploration and extraction as we used to be. That does not mean that there will not be impacts as a result of the drop. We do have local companies that make stuff for upstream. We have trucking companies that move stuff for the upstream side and there are a lot of people in town that are stockholders in companies that are involved in the upstream side.

All of that means that the drop in oil will take money out of Ponca City pockets. It just won’t be as much as it would have been in the past. Both of these issues are likely short term and are expected to resolve themselves soon (meaning in 2020). What should not be overlooked, however, is how quickly this has all happened. Get used to things like that because in our hyper-connected world there is no lag time for information to move, whether that information is real or not. Perception often becomes reality whether you think there is an imbalance between smoke and fire or not. At the end of the day, however, most people work because they need to make a living. That fact will push things to eventually settle to a more stable level….after the ripples settle.
