Forward Together: Ponca City Development Authority

THE DUMPSTER FIRE THAT IS 2020…took another bite this week with the ice storm that hit Oklahoma and ungraciously included Ponca City in the process. Add this to political turmoil everywhere, urban unrest, fires out west, murder hornets, hurricanes along the Gulf Coast and, of yeah, a global pandemic that will just not go away. At the risk of being accused of appropriation or implying something we do not mean to imply, the famous and venerable Chinese curse “May you live in interesting times” comes to mind. Ask any economist and they will tell you that stuff like this is bad for the economy. It’s wasted capital, replacing things without building wealth. That’s the macro view. On a micro level, however, disasters are not all bad, at least not from an economic standpoint.

Setting aside the more important non-economic things like health, safety and so forth, disasters on a local level often attract or pry loose capital and add economic velocity to local markets. Ask Ponca City restaurants about the last few days. Talk to tree trimmers. This underscores, of course, the fact that a business has to be open to enjoy such benefits. Those same restaurants likely had a different view of late March and April. As with anything else, there are winners and there are losers and, this year, a lot of our businesses have been both and to different degrees. With exceptions to be sure, this week’s ice storm and the power outage was more of an impact on residents than businesses as most of Ponca City’s businesses and industries continued to operate. With Halloween tomorrow, who knows what the year has in store for us during the last two months of 2020?

City Central has been celebrating Halloween with a door decorating contest, equipment trainings and a tenant appreciation lunch where quite a bit of B2B networking took place! And that is the name of the game at City Central: start-up businesses getting acquainted with existing businesses and working on projects. Together! In Ponca City. Drop by today and you might see some costumed PCDAers roaming the floors. Follow City Central on FB to see what is happening next and check out the Business Spotlight of the week. Be safe this weekend: Halloween, full moon and time change, Oh My!

I’M FROM THE GOVERNMENT AND I’M HERE TO HELP…Oklahoma’s senior U.S. Senator was in town this week and this senator, we’ll just call him “Jim,” stopped by a gathering of local businesses, the city, the chamber and PCDA. We can’t mention his given name because he’s on next week’s ballot and PCDA doesn’t take sides…that would be cheating. We asked “Jim” about a number of business issues, not the least of which would be the prospects for a second round of COVID-related business assistance, aka a second round of stimulus to businesses.

There was also robust discussion about the SBA and issues related to the first business stimulus round last spring. “Jim” answered the other questions and said that he expects to see a second stimulus come out after the election. He predicted (and he made other predictions too) that it should look a lot like what the Senate passed this week. The get together was an opportunity for the collective Ponca City folks to bring up a number of federal issues and the opportunity wasn’t wasted. PCDA appreciates “Jim” coming to Ponca City and meeting with this group and we wish him, and his four opponents, well next week.

Halo

Halo, a purebred Australian shepherd with a very playful attitude, came to Garrett Bowers family a little over nine years ago. Originally he was Garrett and his son HB's dog, and Garrett reluctantly allowed HB (as a nine year old at the time) to name the puppy Halo...(after his favorite video game). Halo enjoy three years on their ranch in Burbank, OK before moving into town with the family.
He started coming to work with Garrett about a year ago and has been a huge help with all the daily chaos and fast-paced operations in the office. Halo has become everyone's dog here in the office while maintaining a stress-free work environment for all of us. Each morning, Halo wakes and waits for Garrett by the door to head into work.
Halo gets extra exercise walking with Garrett around the yard, running upstairs and riding around from job-to-job. He has a side-kick/ brother at home named Hambone who came from the Humane Society as a rescue. Maybe one day Halo will share his work time with Hambone, but for now, he is the boss’s sidekick and everyone’s buddy at Bowers Trucking and Logistics.

'TIS THE SEASON TO INCREASE SALES
Marketing Strategies for the Holidays

Oklahoma Small Business Development Center presents an online holiday marketing and sales refresher - in this time of COVID. This is a free workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 9 to 10:30 am.

Register online here. This is a free workshop and we could all use a little refresher for the upcoming holiday sales season. Especially since this one is going to be the end (we hope) of a doozy of year. Dare we say, we have been "2020'd" enough?
