Ponca City Cost of Living Index Below National Average

...and that is a very good sign

Cost of Living in Ponca City

Ponca City participates as one of 250 urban areas in the Cost of Living Index (COLI) which measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services.  These costs exclude taxes and non-consumer expenditures for professional and managerial households in the top 20% income bracket.  It is based on more than 90,000 prices covering 60 different items for which prices are collected quarterly by chambers of commerce, economic development organizations and university applied economic centers in each participating urban area.

The composite index is based on six component categories – housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, health care and miscellaneous goods and services.  The Cost of Living Index is published quarterly by C2ER – The Council for Community and Economic Research.  Quarter 2, 2018 marks the 50th Anniversary year of the publication.

National average for the 259 urban areas is 100.  The most expensive urban area for the second quarter Index is New York (Manhattan) NY at 228.3 and the least expensive is Harlingen, TX at 75.7.  Ponca City, OK is below the national average at 88.5 keeping us extremely competitive with Tulsa (87.3), Oklahoma City (86.8) and Hutchinson, KS (91.5).  Wichita, KS does not participate in The Cost of Living Index as this time.

Cost of Groceries

Each quarter, C2ER collects more than 90,000 prices from communities across the US for the COLI.  With food prices a big part of the national media attention, data is collected from twenty-six items from a variety of categories to represent the grocery item component of the index. The most expenses place for grocery items the second quarter of 2018 was Honolulu, Hawaii at 164.9 and the least expensive was Kalamazoo, MI at 76.1.  Ponca City was less than the national average of 100 at 98.6.

The Cost of Living Index grocery and healthcare items change periodically.  2018’s grocery items saw a change to olive oil from canola and the cost of a drop-in yoga class was added.  Ponca City Development Authority (PCDA) staff collect these prices and smile and dial to collect the data from all six categories three times a year.  The fourth quarter is an average of the pricing from the first three quarters of collected information.
