CONGRATS TO PONCA CITY MEDICAL CENTER...on the new emergency room which opened this week. Don't think us cold hearted but health care brings money in and is a huge draw for those seeking their community of choice. Then there's the whole compassion thing...
THE BUILDING FORMERLY KNOWN AS BOB...now home to a company formerly based in Boulder, Colorado aka Continental Technologies, was the subject of a great deal of PCDA attention this week as the construction specifications are nearing completion. These are those fun details upon which contractors bid. To be sure, the final build out of Bob is not nearly as complicated as, say, a large recreation project, but the pitfalls remain the same, (the rising cost of materials, already busy contractors, etc.). Continental is already in part of Bob producing product and issuing paychecks but the final build out, scheduled for completion next Spring, will increase both of the former. Across the street, the Encompass Tool project continues on time and on budget. That 23,000 square foot building will be completed this fall.
VIRTUALLY SPECULATING...with Bob now occupied, people have asked us about another spec building. PCDA is looking hard at the market right now to determine if this makes sense or if other options might be available. For example, could we develop a "virtual" spec building with plans and specifications and approvals in place that could be expanded with a click? That was the subject of a meeting this morning with OU faculty to see if such a project made sense. One of the challenges of an actual building is that every company wants something different and it's a lot easier to change something on paper than on the ground. A virtual building that cuts through the red tape before construction could potentially still allow a company to get in and operate in the same amount of time as a shell building...in theory.
TWO WHEELED CASH...next week brings the Grand National Moto Cross to Ponca City. Lots of people with lots of cash coming to Ponca City is a good thing. It's also an opportunity to showcase Ponca City so give our visitors a friendly Oklahoma hello when you see them.
MONEY...(made you look)...the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology will be holding proposal preparation workshops in early August for the Applied Research Support Program. If you want to learn more, go to www.ocast.state.ok.us.
THIS WEEK....PCDA staff spent the week working the economic development hat trick: one attraction project, one expansion project and one retention project. In addition, our two construction projects continue to require attention as does the business of preparing marketing programs for this fall, the completion of the cost of living survey, prospecting to five companies in another state in advance of a call trip and meeting with existing companies on a variety of issues from workforce to financing to new product development to business intel.
