PONCA CITY NATION...In the last week, PCDA was invited too and did present to two national conferences that were interested in knowing how things are done here in the center of the universe. Last Friday, Tim "K-Man" Burg was in Wichita at the Business Retention and Expansion International Conference, (where we were presented with the award for the best business and expansion program for a community under 50k....see last week's update on our website for more details). Burg was invited to tell the rest of the country why we're so darn cool. He did. On Tuesday, PCDA's own "the other" David Myers was in Charlotte, North Carolina, (is it always that hot?) delivering a presentation to a bunch, (that's the official estimate) of consultants and economic development people about the UML and how Ponca City was able to support the facility the way we did. Don't worry, we gave you all the credit.
IT RAINED IN MAY....while our hearts go out to our friends in Iowa and other places hit hard by weather, PCDA continued to mind the economic development store last month, so to speak, by working two trade shows, one each in New York and Las Vegas. Despite our mild storms, (relatively speaking) we also had 23 contacts with new companies, 27 with existing companies, 14 with consultants and other various get togethers with our regional partners and our friends in government, (remember: government is not a singular noun). We currently have 15 active projects open plus two active leads, all with a potential job count of 622 positions.
BOOMER!!!...if you responded with "Sooner" than good for you. Cheap tricks to get you to read are not beneath us. "Boomer" in this case refers to the first half of "Project Boomerang," a Department of Commerce program to attract people back to Oklahoma that have foolishly gone elsewhere. They want to come back, we just need to let them know that there is great economic opportunity here, along with a much better quality of life then, well, you know. PCDA is on the steering committee for this ‘cause we need to attract our folk back too.
FRIDAY THE 13TH...is just another cheap trick to get you to read. This week, however, was not unlucky for PCDA as we came close to closing a deal for a small company. It's not dead, the company just wants to carefully consider its options. We hope to close this one soon and then you'll know who it is, (remember, we said ‘small.' We don't want to oversell this). We also continued to work on a potentially large expansion project, supported (from afar) a consultant meeting in Dallas on two retail projects and started the process for the development of a proposal for another company. Then there were the two ongoing construction projects...
