IN SEARCH OF A JOB...FAIR...PCDA was at a job fair this week at Northern Oklahoma College, (NOC) along with 500 of the NOC student body and many employers from Ponca City and the surrounding area. There was much interest from those attending in the PCDA Resume Mall, (see www.goponca.com and click on "Ponca Works") and much networking with all the employers that were there. While there is no question that the job market is tight across Kay County and even tighter in the rest of the United States, (we're still more than two points better than the national unemployment rate) there are a lot of part-time positions available in Ponca City. Visit www.myponcacity.com for jobs with the City of Ponca City.
THE BUSINESS OF FLYING...this week, PCDA and a number of other Oklahoma communities were at the National Business Aviation Association Conference in Orlando talking to companies that build, buy, maintain and use business airplanes. Wichita is a big center for this industry and there is an important amount of component work done here in Ponca City to serve the Wichita manufacturers. We obviously want to do more of that work. Biz Jets, as they are called, have hit some turbulence of late, what with the slow national economy and the characterization of private planes as luxuries, (try telling the man or woman with a job at Cessna that their job is a "luxury"). Cessna's production has been cut in half over the last couple of years but the industry sees growth ahead as the economy stabilizes.
SPREADING THE GOOD WORD...PCDA was on the stump this week and will be again next week. This week, we talked to the American Association of University Woman and the Tonkawa Leadership Group about the importance of the upcoming 2010 U.S. Census to government, education and services funding for Kay County. Stand up and be counted Kay County for all sorts of reasons - just call Katherine at the PCDA office, (580.765.7070) if you need a few of those reasons, or if would like to have her speak to your group or business. PCDA will also be at the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs next week talking about the national and local economy, (you can't separate the two) and briefing the City Commission on Monday.
AN ALTERNATIVE TO ENERGY???...well, make that alternative energy? We all know about the strong energy heritage in Ponca City. Rather than be left behind as everyone looks at fossil fuel alternatives, who better to lead that initiative than the community that lead the last 100 years? That's the idea as PCDA embarks upon a fairly ambitious campaign to stake or flag on the beach of the development of alternative energy development. You'll hear more about this is the future but next week PCDA will be at the American Solar Power Conference in Anaheim meeting with companies developing this one aspect of alternative energy.
