A PONCA CITY CHRISTMAS CAROL

"Bah Humbug," shouted Poncaneezer, to his helper, Tiny Tim

You want the 25th off? Every Christmas? On a whim?

 

A fine excuse," the old man said, "to pick the public's pocket,

Their half cent sales tax shouldn't help you leave here like a rocket

 

Please sir," Tim stepped back to say, his fear had made him numb,

It's once a year I ask for leave, why must you be so glum?

 

It's yesterday I miss, said Scrooge, things keep on getting stranger,

You frolic like the youngsters, keep it up we're all in danger

 

That Christmas Eve the ghost of Marland came forward into sight

to Poncaneezer Scrooge he bid, that dark and Holy night

 

"Three spirits will appear, over three nights they'll come fast

To show you what can happen if you're wedded to the past

 

Scrooge said My old friend Marland, you were always good to us

Why is it you must push this change, why do you make a fuss?

 

The spirits will reveal, what it is you need to see,

For I am gone and not the future, stop living life through me.

 

The first spirit did arrive that night, a shadow it did cast,

I am the first one you will meet," said the ghost of Ponca's past

 

A company town, is what we were, in the day of the nation state

The world was small and we controlled this place & steered its fate.

 

The second ghost came forward, smiling broadly, very pleasant

I come to tell you how it is, I'm the ghost of Ponca's present.

 

Of jobs and goods we have a lot, no one need go without

There is no single company that can knock our market out.

 

The third ghost came the third night, looking quiet, without boost

Of all the spirits, Scrooge said aloud, You're the one I fear the most.

 

The mighty ghost, Scrooge had to say, was hopeful without sorrow

Let's look ahead, Poncaneezer, for I'm the ghost of our tomorrow

 

Speed is vital, so he said, and the past is all depleted,

Success will come to those that change before the change is needed

 

We're diversified, the new ghost said, our base is so much stronger,

Manufacturing, sensors, oil & services, our life line is much longer

 

Our businesses, they innovate, when the market tells them so

The weak & sliding greenback even helps our exports grow

 

So look ahead and stake your claim, we're well set for what's next

Poncaneezer woke on Christmas morn, he knew that from the feel,

The spirits did it all last night, this speed thing is for real!

 

I must make good on what they said, I have this second chance

Poncaneezer put his shoes on and he broke into a dance

 

Tiny Tim will help, he cried, we'll begin in our own shop

We'll start today and look ahead, for the changes never stop

 

Tomorrow is for us to build, we mustn't walk, we'll run,
